Valentino Rossi, the legendary MotoGP icon, is still chasing his dream of racing a Hypercar in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), but the road to that goal seems more challenging than ever. Despite his unwavering passion, Rossi admits the odds are stacked against him in the short term, leaving fans and critics alike wondering if this dream will ever become a reality.

Rossi has never hidden his ambition to compete in prototype machinery, firmly believing it aligns better with his driving style compared to the GT3 cars he’s raced since retiring from MotoGP in 2021. But here’s where it gets controversial: while Rossi’s talent is undeniable, the competitive landscape of Hypercar racing is fiercely guarded by younger, factory-backed drivers, raising questions about whether age and experience can still secure a seat in this elite category.

Last year, Rossi got a taste of Hypercar racing when he tested the BMW M Hybrid V8 at the Bahrain rookie test. He impressed by finishing just a tenth off the pace set by Arthur Leclerc, Charles Leclerc’s younger brother, in a Ferrari 499P. And this is the part most people miss: despite this promising performance, Rossi hasn’t secured a Hypercar drive, remaining in the WEC’s LMGT3 class for a second season in 2025. Could this be a missed opportunity for both Rossi and the teams involved?

The 46-year-old spent the entire year working on a potential Hypercar program for 2026, but those plans remain elusive. “The Hypercar feels more like a motorcycle than a GT3, and I love driving it,” Rossi shared in Bahrain. “We’ve tried to make it happen this year and next, but it’s proven difficult. I don’t know if it will ever happen—it’s a real shame.”

When asked about the possibility of contesting individual Hypercar races instead of a full season, Rossi replied, “It’s a good idea, but I’m not sure it’s feasible. Hypercar teams usually commit to full-season campaigns, and BMW already has a roster of younger drivers. It’s frustrating because I feel so comfortable in the car, and it could be incredibly exciting to race at that level.”

Rossi’s partnership with Vincent Vosse’s WRT team, BMW’s factory partner in the Hypercar category, could open doors to IMSA’s GTP class, particularly in longer endurance races requiring additional drivers. “WRT’s expansion into IMSA next year might create an opportunity,” Rossi said. “I’m hopeful, but Daytona 2025 is likely off the table. Maybe in the future.”

Here’s the burning question: Is Rossi’s age becoming a barrier in a sport increasingly dominated by younger talent, or is there still room for a legend like him to make a mark in Hypercar racing? His three-year deal with BMW as a factory driver ends this year, and while a renewal is expected, his 2026 plans remain uncertain. “We’re still deciding which championship to focus on,” Rossi admitted. “The WEC is definitely an option, but we’ll discuss the best program with BMW in the coming months.”

Since joining the WEC full-time in 2024, Rossi has scored four podium finishes in 16 races, nearly winning the Imola 6 Hours this year alongside Kelvin van der Linde and Ahmad Al Harthy. His dedication is undeniable, but will it be enough to secure that coveted Hypercar seat?
