A significant development in the fight against online scams took place at the six-nation meeting in Kunming, China, on November 14, 2025. The event, the first of its kind, brought together representatives from China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam to discuss and strengthen joint action against online fraud. The meeting was a pivotal step in addressing the growing concern of cybercrime in the region.
The attendees included high-ranking officials such as the Deputy Minister for Home Affairs of Myanmar, Maj-Gen Aung Kyaw Kyaw, and the Assistant Minister of Public Security from China. The meeting's agenda focused on three critical areas: forming an international coalition to combat telecommunications and online fraud, conducting joint operations to clear and dismantle fraud hotspots, and enhancing extradition cooperation. These efforts aim to disrupt the operations of criminal networks and protect victims.
Maj-Gen Aung Kyaw Kyaw emphasized Myanmar's commitment to regional cooperation, stating that the country will work towards dismantling fraud networks, rescuing victims, and upholding the rule of law. He highlighted the shared responsibility of the Lancang-Mekong community in combating online fraud and the potential of the Lancang-Mekong cooperation mechanism as a platform for addressing these challenges.
The meeting also attracted observers from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), INTERPOL's Singapore Regional Office, and the Lancang-Mekong Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation Centre (LMLECC). These international organizations contributed valuable insights and expertise to the discussions.
The event concluded with closing remarks from the Assistant Minister of China's Ministry of Public Security and the heads of delegation from each participating country. The Myanmar delegation returned to Yangon on November 15, 2025, with a renewed sense of purpose and collaboration in the fight against online scams.
