In the bustling city of Dallas, Texas, a legend was born at Gonzaga University. Ryan Nembhard, a dynamic guard, left an indelible mark during his two seasons in Spokane under the guidance of Coach Mark Few. Reflecting on his time at Gonzaga, Ryan expressed gratitude for the preparation it provided for the next level, calling it one of the best decisions of his life.
Despite being overlooked in the 2024-25 NBA Draft, Ryan's talent caught the eye of the Dallas Mavericks, who signed him as an undrafted free agent. "They showed genuine interest and had a need for a point guard at the time," Ryan explained. "I felt like I had a real chance to make the roster and get a shot here."
Ryan joins an exclusive club of Gonzaga alumni who have made it to the NBA, including Chet Holmgren, Rui Hachimura, and his own brother, Andrew, who reached the NBA Finals with the Indiana Pacers this summer. "Both of us in the league is a dream come true, and we've enjoyed sharing our experiences and insights about the NBA," Ryan shared.
After a dedicated offseason, Ryan's hard work paid off, and he broke out in December, showcasing his skills on the court. "I've always believed in myself, and that belief stems from the hard work I put in," he said. "I knew this was a possibility if I kept working towards it."
Ryan's performance in Denver was nothing short of historic - 28 points, 10 assists, and no turnovers, making him the first undrafted rookie in history to achieve such a feat.
"He's playing the game the right way, and his teammates love having him on the court," said Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd. "He's taking the shots that are there, and he's playing at a very high level."
Ryan continues to develop his game alongside the number one overall pick, Cooper Flagg. "He's just 18, but he's already playing at an elite level, and we've built a great relationship," Ryan noted.
