No Mercy Documentary: Female Filmmakers on Gender, Rebellion & Power | Isa Willinger (2026)

Cinephil Acquires Isa Willinger's 'No Mercy': A Cinematic Journey into Women's Cinema

Cinephil, a renowned platform for cinematic exploration, has secured the rights to Isa Willinger's groundbreaking documentary, 'No Mercy'. This feature-length film is a powerful cinematic manifesto, showcasing the works of some of the world's most fearless female and non-binary filmmakers. The list of directors includes the likes of Céline Sciamma, Ana Lily Amirpour, Nina Menkes, Virginie Despentes, Alice Diop, and Catherine Breillat, each bringing their unique perspective to the screen.

'No Mercy' delves into themes of gender, authorship, and rebellion, offering a raw and honest portrayal of violence, trauma, revenge, and power. It explores the concept of the 'female gaze' and how women and non-binary filmmakers depict pain and defiance in their work. The documentary had its North American premiere at DOC NYC on November 13, following its world premiere at Filmfest Hamburg and subsequent screenings at Viennale, Odesa International Film Festival, Festival do Rio, and Festival dei Popoli.

Produced by Ira Tondowski, Alex Tondowski, Sabine Gruber, and Peter Drössler, the film is a Germany-Austria co-production with a release date set for 2026. Willinger, known for her award-winning documentary 'Hi, AI', engages with the filmmakers in 'No Mercy', gaining insights into their creative processes and the challenges they face in a male-dominated industry.

The impressive lineup of directors also includes Monika Treut, Joey Soloway, Apolline Traoré, Mouly Surya, Margit Czenki, and Jackie Buet, the director of the Women's International Film Festival of Créteil. The film's teaser trailer offers a glimpse into the powerful storytelling and raw honesty that 'No Mercy' promises.

Tondowski Films expressed their excitement about the collaboration, stating, 'We are thrilled to work with Cinephil, whose commitment to socially relevant and visionary storytelling aligns perfectly with our vision. Their passion for the film confirms our belief in 'No Mercy' as a powerful and deeply human story that deserves a global audience.'

Cinephil, known for its acclaimed documentaries such as 'The Dating Game', 'Natchez, Notes of a True Criminal', and 'Hollywoodgate', will handle world sales for 'No Mercy'. Shoshi Korman, Cinephil's co-managing director, emphasized the film's impact, saying, 'No Mercy challenges the myths surrounding the 'female gaze' and exposes the radical honesty that defines women's cinema today. Isa Willinger's approach is fearless, and we are proud to champion a film that speaks with such clarity, defiance, and vision.'

Supported by public broadcasters ZDF/Arte and ORF, 'No Mercy' will be theatrically released by Real Fiction in Germany and Stadtkino in Austria in early 2026, marking a significant milestone in the celebration of women's cinema.
