Merck, a global leader in science and technology, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by signing a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with SK Innovation E&S. This agreement will bring 16 megawatts (MW) of new renewable electricity capacity to its Life Science sites in South Korea, starting in December 2027. This is a groundbreaking move, as it represents Merck's longest renewable energy commitment in the Asia-Pacific region and demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in manufacturing.
The PPA will provide approximately 21,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, covering around 75% of the Life Science business's electricity demand in South Korea. This initiative is a crucial part of Merck's global renewable energy strategy, which includes virtual PPAs in Europe and North America, as well as additional PPAs and on-site installations worldwide. By diversifying its renewable energy sources, Merck is well-positioned to achieve its ambitious 2030 target of sourcing 80% of its purchased electricity from renewable sources, ahead of schedule.
"This agreement is a testament to our long-term commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility," said Tim Jaeger, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer of the Life Science business at Merck. "By adding renewable electricity to our operations in South Korea, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also empowering our customers to make more sustainable choices."
Merck's dedication to sustainability is a driving force behind its technological and scientific advancements. Since its founding in 1668, the company has thrived by embracing scientific exploration and responsible entrepreneurship. The founding family remains the majority owner of the publicly listed company, and Merck holds the global rights to its name and brand, with the exception of the United States and Canada, where it operates under different brand names in various sectors.
This PPA is a significant milestone in Merck's journey towards climate-neutral operations by 2040. It highlights the company's proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges and its commitment to making a positive impact on the world. As Merck continues to innovate and expand its renewable energy initiatives, it sets an example for the industry, inspiring others to follow suit and contribute to a more sustainable future.
