A Life Well-Lived: Unveiling Lord Menzies Campbell's Legacy and Family

The passing of a political giant has left an indelible mark on British politics, but amidst the tributes, there's a story of a remarkable family that deserves to be told.

Lord Menzies Campbell, a former Olympian and leader of the Liberal Democrats, passed away at 84, leaving behind a legacy that transcends politics and sports. His death sent shockwaves through the political arena, with past prime ministers and notable politicians offering condolences. Affectionately known as 'Ming' by his peers, Lord Campbell's impact extended beyond the House of Commons, reaching the running track as well.

Officially titled Lord Campbell of Pittenweem, he hailed from Glasgow and represented the constituency of North East Fife for three decades before ascending to the upper chamber in 2015. His final days were spent in London, watching the Liberal Democrats Party Conference, a fitting end to a life dedicated to public service.

But here's where it gets personal. Lord Campbell's surviving family includes his stepson, James Grant-Suttie, from his marriage to Elspeth Grant-Suttie, a woman he cherished as his 'rock'. James, the son of Elspeth and her first husband, the late Sir Philip Grant-Suttie, has three sons, one of whom shared his thoughts on his grandfather's passing.

Lord Campbell's grandson, Gregor Grant-Suttie, described him as a unique Scotsman, saying, "Ming's achievements in sport, law, and politics are impressive, but they pale in comparison to his accomplishments as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend."

So, who was Lord Campbell's wife, Elspeth?

Lord Campbell and Elspeth married in 1970 when her son James was just four. It was love at first sight, and the couple officially tied the knot just three months after meeting. Elspeth, the daughter of Major General Roy Urquhart, commander of the British Airborne Division at Arnhem in 1944, became Lord Campbell's 'constant political companion', managing his office from their Edinburgh home.

Elspeth passed away from a heart attack at the age of 83, on 5 June 2023, leaving a void in Lord Campbell's life.

Now, let's delve into the life of Lord Campbell's stepson, James.

When Lord Campbell married Elspeth, he became a father figure to James, who was heir to the Grant-Suttie Baronetcy of Balgone in East Lothian. James has since claimed that title, and he speaks fondly of his relationship with Lord Campbell.

In an interview with The Times, James shared, "I've always had a great relationship with Lord Campbell. From the beginning, I called him my stepdad. We made decisions together about prep school, and he always offered advice rather than imposing his will. Our shared love for sports brought us closer. We'd take James out of school, feed him, watch international rugby matches at Murrayfield, and send him back to school with sausage rolls and treats."

Lord Campbell's life and family legacy are a testament to the power of love, friendship, and shared passions. His impact on British politics and sports is undeniable, but it's the personal connections and the love he fostered that truly define his remarkable life.
