Goodbye Grody Carpet! Metro Retires Iconic 2000 Series Railcars | Washington DC Metro History (2025)

Farewell to the Carpeted Metro: The 2000 Series Railcars are History

The iconic Metro trains with their carpeted interiors are now a thing of the past. The 2000 series railcars, known for their brown and orange seats and carpeted floors, have officially been retired, marking the end of an era dating back to the 1980s.

For many riders, the carpeted railcars evoke memories, but not always pleasant ones. As Brasile, a regular Metro user, noted, "Things fall on it, stay on it, whatever. Who knows when they'll get a chance to clean it."

The carpet, while cozy, had its drawbacks. It trapped a musty smell that occasionally filled the Metro cars, as Charlie, another rider, pointed out, "Yeah, you don't want that."

Metro has decided to phase out the 2000 series cars, removing them entirely from the system. This decision comes as a relief to some, like Rich, who believes it's "nice, probably more sanitary."

The 2000 series railcars, which began service in 1983, played a significant role in Metro's history. They were the first to feature external speakers for announcements and transported approximately 775 million people over 41 years, covering over 200 million miles. Despite their retirement, Metro acknowledges their importance.

Looking ahead, the 8000 series railcars are set to start testing on Metro in 2027, promising a new generation of trains with improved features and amenities. The old 2000 series will be dismantled and recycled outside Baltimore, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Metro's transportation history.
