A major gas discovery has the industry buzzing! Eni's exploration well in the Kutei Basin, Indonesia, has hit a significant gas reserve, estimated at 600 billion cubic feet (Bcf). But wait, there's more to this exciting find.
The Konta-1 well, located approximately 50 kilometers off the coast of East Kalimantan, has revealed a potential game-changer. Eni's initial estimates suggest a whopping 1 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas could be within reach, exceeding expectations. And this is just the beginning.
Drilling down to a depth of 4,575 meters in 570-meter-deep waters, Eni encountered gas in four distinct Miocene-age sandstone reservoirs. The reservoirs displayed excellent petrophysical properties, a promising sign for production. And the results from the production test were impressive: a flow of 31 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/D) of gas and around 700 barrels per day (B/D) of condensate from one reservoir alone.
But here's where it gets even more intriguing. Eni believes the well could produce up to 80 MMcf/D of gas and 1,600 B/D of condensate from multiple reservoirs. And the company hints at further potential, suggesting that additional reservoir segments in the Konta Prospect area could push the overall volumes beyond 1 Tcf. This is the part most people miss—the possibility of even greater reserves.
With the Konta discovery conveniently located near existing facilities, Eni is exploring fast-track development options. This discovery has also given Eni the confidence to continue its ambitious exploration drilling campaign in the Kutei Basin, with plans to drill four more wells in 2026.
Eni's significant stake in the Muara Bakau Production Sharing Contract (PSC) at 88.3%, with Saka Energi holding the remaining 11.7%, further highlights the company's commitment to the region. Moreover, Eni's recent joint venture agreement with Petronas for operations in Indonesia and Malaysia, with a planned investment of over $15 billion over 5 years, showcases a long-term vision for the area's energy development.
