This is the grim reality of the 'coal mafia,' a criminal underworld that's been plaguing Jharkhand and West Bengal for years. But on November 21, 2025, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) launched a bold strike, raiding over 40 locations across these states in a coordinated effort to dismantle this illicit network.
And this is the part most people miss: the sheer scale of this operation. Over 100 ED officials and staffers fanned out across the two states at 6 a.m., targeting key figures and locations linked to coal theft, smuggling, and illegal mining.
In Jharkhand, the ED zeroed in on 18 locations, including those associated with entities like Anil Goyal, Sanjay Udhyog, L B Singh, and Amar Mandal. These names might not ring a bell for most, but they're allegedly central players in the coal smuggling racket, siphoning off millions worth of resources from the state's mines.
But here's where it gets controversial: the ED's crackdown extended to West Bengal, where 24 premises in Durgapur, Purulia, Howrah, and Kolkata came under scrutiny. Among those targeted were individuals like Narendra Kharka, Yudhistar Ghosh, Krishna Murari Kayal, Chinmayi Mondal, and Rajkishore Yadav. While the ED hasn't disclosed specific charges, the focus on illegal mining, transportation, and storage of coal suggests a deep-rooted problem that goes beyond petty theft.
