African health experts are taking a stand against disease outbreaks, and they're doing it with a powerful new tool: genome sequencing. But here's where it gets controversial...
In a collaborative effort between China and Africa, health professionals from across the continent are gaining access to cutting-edge technology and knowledge through a three-week training program. This initiative, hosted at the China-built Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters, is a significant step towards strengthening public health capacity in Africa.
The hands-on training has been an eye-opener for the participants, offering immediate practical value for their daily work. Kone Klima Marcel, a microbiologist from Mali, described it as a "great opportunity" to learn about Chinese DNA sequencing technology. He was particularly impressed by the DNA nanoballs sequencing and the cyclone sequencing machine, which he believes will revolutionize DNA sequencing in Africa.
"The automated Chinese sequencing technology is a game-changer," Marcel said. "It allows us to detect pathogens quickly and efficiently, reducing the need for manual steps and providing near real-time analysis. This is a huge advancement for our laboratories."
Precious Simushi, a biomedical scientist from Zambia, echoed Marcel's enthusiasm. She highlighted the importance of the training in biosafety and Chinese surveillance systems. Simushi was intrigued by the session on phages, a potential solution to the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance.
"Phage therapy is a game-changer in an era of increasing antimicrobial resistance," Simushi explained. "We've learned how to use phages to treat bacterial infections that are resistant to traditional antibiotics. This training has equipped us with the knowledge to handle these challenges more effectively."
And this is the part most people miss... The automated extraction technology introduced by Chinese experts will enable African health experts to isolate bacteriophages in a matter of minutes, a process that used to take much longer.
"With this technology, we can detect and respond to outbreaks much faster," Simushi added. "It's a powerful tool to contain and manage disease spread."
Idrissa Laybohr Kamara, a doctor from Sierra Leone, emphasized the rising number of drug-resistant diseases in Africa and how the new phage therapy introduced by Chinese experts could be a game-changer.
"Phage therapy is a breakthrough. It's a new technology and treatment option that can address antibiotic resistance in Africa. This is a significant development," Kamara said.
Liu Wenfeng, a Chinese trainer and researcher at BGI Group, highlighted the advanced technologies brought to the workshop, including DNA sequencing and antibiotic treatment.
"We're here to support African health professionals in their fight against drug-resistant diseases. The knowledge and technology we're sharing will make a real difference," Liu said.
The workshop, which concludes this Sunday, has brought together 30 participants from 16 African countries. The focus has been on core laboratory skills, accurate pathogen detection, drug-resistance monitoring and analysis, and standardized laboratory quality management.
