A groundbreaking three-year initiative to introduce HPV vaccines to low-income nations has saved an estimated 1.4 million lives from cervical cancer, according to the vaccine alliance Gavi. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the power of global collaboration. An estimated 86 million girls are now shielded from the leading cause of cervical cancer, thanks to the tireless efforts of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and lower-income countries. The impact is particularly profound in low-income countries, which bear the brunt of HPV-related cancer cases due to limited screening services and treatment access. These countries account for 90% of the 350,000 cervical cancer deaths recorded in 2022, according to Gavi. The organization's CEO, Sania Nishtar, praised the incredible commitment of countries and organizations in reaching the target of protecting 86 million girls. The vaccine coverage rate in Africa has soared from 4% of girls in 2014 to 44% by the end of 2024, surpassing the rate in Europe at 38%. This success is attributed to the alliance's strategic use of economies of scale, making vaccines accessible and affordable for about 50 poorer countries. Gavi secured commitments from manufacturers to invest in HPV vaccines, resulting in a significant price reduction. The price of HPV vaccines in Gavi-supported countries now ranges from $2.90 to $5.18 per dose, compared to $100 or more elsewhere. This collaborative effort is a major step towards eliminating cervical cancer, a disease that still claims a woman's life every two minutes. The World Health Organization (WHO) further supported this progress by endorsing a single-dose HPV vaccination schedule in 2022, allowing for more efficient vaccination campaigns.
